STAND-UP TUESDAYS: Scott Long

Stand-Up Tuesdays is a weekly comedy spotlight written by the wonderfully talented Angie Frissore. Covering both known and unknown comics, Stand-up Tuesdays is your new source for all things funny.

This week, Angie puts a spotlight on Scott Long’s comedy career. If you or your comedy troupe would like to be featured on Stand-Up Tuesdays, please email utgjames@gmail.com.

In this, the final Stand Up Tuesdays of 2013, we close the year out with another year-end Rooftop Comedy gem in comedian Scott Long’s new release, Good Dad…Not a Great Dad. Recorded at the Skyline Comedy Club in Appleton, Wisconsin, Good Dad…Not a Great Dad offers a unique mix of sharp-witted hilarity and touching, poignant moments.

Long’s performance tells the story of his life over the last twelve years, in which he became a father to an obviously much-adored autistic daughter, and, soon after, twins. It isn’t all lollipops and bubblegum, though, as Long hilariously admits to imagining his life without kids and jokes about searching for a new wife when his decides to leave her job, eliminating their health insurance.

Unlike many comedy CD’s I’ve reviewed this year, Good Dad…Not a Great Dad clearly paints the evolution of a man who adores his children – including some amazingly entertaining stories that will surely teach you about the proper way to enjoy life (i.e. Long’s daughter deciding to streak through Abercrombie & Fitch much to the dismay of the teenage employee). Long takes on the all-too-common use of the word ‘retard,’ not only citing the myriad of far better terms that could be used (such as asshat, for instance). And while the audience seemingly waits for a punchline – there isn’t one, and nor does there need to be – and once he makes his case, you will certainly think twice about tossing the term around freely.

I’ve listened to and reviewed 52 comedy albums in 2013, but Scott Long’s Good Dad….Not a Great Dad is probably the one that touched me the most. My only issue with the album would be the title, as that’s clearly not the case. Call me naive, but Scott Long certainly is a great dad – and a hilarious one to boot.
