REVIEW: Adventures / Run Forever 7″ Split

Artist: Adventures / Run Forever
Album: Adventures / Run Forever Split
Genre: Indie Rock
Label: No Sleep Records

There seems to be a trend in indie music lately, one that consists of turning down the vocals, while turning up the fuzz, and I am all for it. Clean sounding records are overrated anyway — life isn’t always clean. Much like the states of minds we find ourselves in when turning to music for help, our thinking may not be clear, so why our music? It is a muddled path we pave, and to fully understand and experience those roads, it is better to know that others have fallen suit to the same roadblocks.

With the pairing of Adventures and Run Forever, this mindset is collectively and consciously put together in a short, but endearing work. With both bands hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, there is a sense of continuity, or mutual appreciation between the tracks. Beginning with Adventures’ “Call Me At Night,” the distinct tonality of fuzz is felt immensely. The band knows how to seamlessly flow their guitar melodies into the vocals, creating an atmosphere that is whole. Fans of the band that have delved deeper into ’90s bands on Spotify will be surely satisfied with what Adventures is doing. Their second track, “Thin,” continues with the production revealed on “Call Me At Night,” slowing down the tempo a bit, but surely not toning down the volume.

Run Forever debut their side of the split with “Headlights,” a track that remains a personal favorite from the band, as well as the entire split. Fans of Title Fight will find solace in the sweeping guitar bends, as well as the rich, deep, and lush guitar textures. Watching the band emit this track live will most likely showcase a lot of grooving heads. Their second track, “Lost The Feeling,” will find fans of their previous material right at home, though for me at least, the track sits in the shadow of “Headlights.”

While a short work to say the least, fans of both bands, either band, or even other bands in the genre, will find pleasure in this release. While I am personally partial to Run Forever’s tracks, I believe Adventures have moved their sound to a newer level, and I hope to catch new material from them soon.

SCORE: 8/10
