‘Wild’ Trailer: Reese Witherspoon Hikes Her Troubles Away

Lest anyone has forgotten in the wake of a mishap or another, Reese Witherspoon is an Oscar-winning actress. She hasn’t made many films since her big 2005, usually only one movie a year (though they do include such acclaimed fare as Mud and Four Chri– never mind). Perhaps that first mishap has her motivated to rehab her image, as she is suddenly quite busy.

First up is Wild, which we’ve just received a trailer for. Over the two minutes, it’s revealed that Witherspoon’s Cheryl Strayed is a woman escaping from tragedy and self-destruction by trekking over 1,000 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, less a vacation and more a self-imposed intervention.

The film could very easily teeter and fall into melodrama or Oscar baity badness, but the trailer is very well put-together, promising a deep and meaningful character study. The film was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club) and adapted from Cheryl Strayed’s memoir by Nick Hornby (About A BoyAn EducationHigh Fidelity), so the pedigree is there. The film also stars Gaby Hoffman, Laura Dern, Michiel Huisman, Charles Baker, Kevin Rankin, and Thomas Sadoski.

Wild is slated for a December 4 release, after we’ll have seen Witherspoon star in The Good Lie but before we’ll see her in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice
