Get Wet: Aquaman Will Have His Own Film

There were rumors that surfaced near the end of 2013 that claimed Jason Mamoa had been approached by Warner Bros. about the possibility of portraying Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman. Those claims have since been accepted as truth, even though WB refuses to comment on the situation, and today we learned the studio that is placing a lot of money in the hands of DC Comics has decided to give Aquaman his very own film.

The Hollywood Reporter ran an exclusive late Tuesday night, August 12, that revealed to the world the fact Warner Bros. has hired not one, but two different people to pen two different Aquaman scripts. Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad are writing, separately, in a kind of quasi-battle of wits to create scripts that WB will eventually choose between. The practice allows for release dates to be set while a project is still in development while giving it a muscular push. There is no talk of what the script might entail, but many believe the events in the film will be set in motion during the events of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

Aquaman was originally created in 1941 by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger. He joined the Justice League in the early 1960s, but did not become a pop culture phenomenon until the Super Friends TV showed debuted in the 1970s. Unfortunately for Aquaman, the show often made him the butt of jokes for being silly and rather simplistic; the perception was that all he could do was talk to marine animals.

Recently, Zack Snyder caused a bit of a ruckus when a clip of the director calling a Detroit radio station to defend Aquaman went public. The audio was recorded in recent weeks and has been confirmed by Snyder’s camp to actually be the director. You can hear the clip below:

Did you hear that bit about Aquaman’s trident being strong enough to cut Superman’s flesh? Something tells me that may be a teaser for what fans can expect from Batman V Superman.

Warner Bros. has not revealed which of its recently announced, planned comic book movie release dates will belong to Aquaman, but we expect that information will be made public soon. Follow UTG on Twitter for updates.
