And you thought Tusk had a silly premise.
The Mule is the story of a man who, under suspicion of being a drug mule, is detained and placed under observation for seven days. We then see numerous shady folks maneuvering to manipulate our intentionally-constipated hero, including a gleefully mean-spirited Hugo Weaving and a perfectly menacing John Noble. Never before have the contents of one’s kiester been so valuable.
The film’s plot summary:
Inspired by true events, The Mule tells the story of a naive man who is detained by federal police with lethal narcotics hidden in his stomach. Alone and afraid, ‘the Mule’ makes a desperate choice; to defy his bodily functions and withhold the evidence… literally. By doing so he becomes a ‘human time bomb’; dragging cops, criminals and concerned family into his impossible escapade.
That about sums up the straight-faced weirdness of this dark comedy, which is only betrayed in this trailer by elements like the framing of the initial pants-dropping and Weaving’s joy in manipulating the sounds of a deflating balloon.
Per /Film, the Australian film has no US release date yet, but the rights are held by XLrator Media. Tony Mahony and Angus Sampson direct.
