‘The Orphanage’ director gives us a stunning new trailer for ‘A Monster Calls’

Nine years ago, J.A. Bayona graced us with El Orfanato, an excellently atmospheric supernatural thriller. Today we were gifted with a trailer for Bayona’s most recent directorial effort, A Monster Calls, and it’s shaping up to be just as excellent.

A Monster Calls follows the story of a young boy (played by Lewis MacDougall) as he befriends a giant tree monster in order to deal with the struggles of his life, including being ostracized at school and the illness of his mother. The film looks gorgeous, with excellent cinematography throughout the trailer. That being said, our favorite part of the trailer is that Liam Neeson voices the tree monster. The voice is at the perfect balance of being recognizable as Neeson while still sounding otherworldly. The small moment when the monster responds to the boy’s utterance of “woah” with “woah, indeed” had us all grinning ear to ear. You can check out the full trailer below.

A Monster Calls, starring Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones, Liam Neeson, and Sigourney Weaver is set for release on October 14.
