‘Suburban Gothic’ Trailer: Richard Bates Jr. Keeps It Weird

Excision was a flawed, but deliriously enjoyable suburban horror romp that introduced filmmaker Richard Bates Jr. to the world. His latest film does not seem to stray too far from the formula of the last, but it might be just accessible enough to put the budding director’s work in front of countless new eyes.

Suburban Gothic is a horror comedy about one of the hardest times in modern adulthood: The post-college slump. Starring Matthew Gray Gubler and Kat Dennings, the film follows a young man who is forced to swallow his pride and move back in with his parents, despite the fact that he recently received a college degree. To make matters worse, he’s beginning to see visions he saw as a child and they seem to exist solely to make his life even more of a living hell. There’s also a hot bartender, but the history the two leads share is far from typical. Check out the first trailer below:

The official synopsis reads:

quirky young Raymond has been having a tough couple of months. Even with his recent college degree, he can’t find work in the big city — and he’s realizing that it’s time to swallow his pride and move back in with his overbearing, suburban parents.

Little does he realize, however, that this temporary layover in Middle America is going to be anything but mundane… Haunted by otherworldly visions since childhood, Raymond soon finds himself beset upon by spirits intent on making his time at home as miserable as possible. His only outlet for sanity seems to be local bartender Becca who, aside from chasing off the same bullies who wanted to beat Raymond up in high school, finds herself drawn to his endearing quirkiness. Together, the duo find themselves unraveling the mystery behind a century-old murder — and scaring up plenty of laughs along the way.

Suburban Gothic will have its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival on July 19 at 9:45 p.m. Expect distribution news to surface later this year.

(Kudos to Fangoria for this news.)
