Keane Frontman Denies Break Up Rumors, Says Band Will Be Taking ‘A Bit Of Time Out’ From Being Together

What we have here is a classic case of publication versus the artist. One thinks a quote meant the end of one of the UK’s most notable pop outfits in recent memory, while the other couldn’t disagree more. Which is right? Let’s find out.

On Sunday (October 20), The Sun reported that Keane would soon be breaking up after 16 years so singer Tom Chaplin could make a solo album and main songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley could focus on penning hits for other artists. We didn’t run the story because at the time The Sun had no direct quotes or confirmation from the band. This morning, we learned why.

Hoping to calm the fears of frightened fans, Tom Chaplin has spoken out to deny and clarify what was reported by The Sun. Speaking to Real Radio Yorkshire, Chaplin is quoted as saying: “This is something that has been twisted by one particular article in one particular newspaper over the weekend. All we’ve said is that we’ve been very busy for a few years and we’d like to take a bit of time out from being Keane, and somehow that has morphed into ‘Keane are splitting up’.”

Keane originally formed in 1997, and over the years have earned a number of hits on either side of the Atlantic. We’ll bring you more on their future plans, as well as their various solo efforts, as additional information becomes available. Follow UTG on Twitter for updates.

What a refreshing and sensible attitude you have. I was appalled, yesterday, at all the so called ‘respectable’ music reporters just following, like sheep, and repeating the bullcrap The Sun had churned out.

We in the (hardcore) Keane fandom know the truth, that it’s going to be just a break and not a break-up. We mostly laughed each time we saw yet another high profile music website post it on Twitter, but there were more casual fans who were genuinely sad and upset at the ‘news’.

So, thank you for not being a sheep.
