Freak folk group tUnE-yArDs announced last month that a new album would be coming out May 6 via 4AD. The album, called Nikki Nack, will be a brighter, more accessible sound than the previous two albums. With the new single shared today, “Wait for a Minute,” we get a better understanding of how.
Unlike the previously shared “Water Fountain,” the new single is more mellow and bass heavy. Any sporadic street drumming and clanking you may have come to know well is pushed aside for some humming synth and extra bass. Merrill Garbus is slowing her voice down and sweetening up to the point where it seems to have taken influences from soul tracks — although, considering it was produced by Malay (who worked on Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange), that’s not too far of a stretch.
