First Impressions: MxPx – On The Cover 2

First Impressions is a segment where we let you into our early thoughts on a highly anticipated album, This week, we have our early views of the highly anticipated album from MxPx entitled, On The Cover 2. It drops late March from Tooth and Nail Records.

Pop punk is a field of music that only is recent years has been able to claim to have “legends” in the genre. One of these acts would have to be MxPx who are still going strong over 15 years into their career. In March they will drop the long awaited On The Cover 2 and we just took our first listen in the last few days. Let me tell you something – it does not disappoint. Though many of the covers are songs I’m sure 90% of today’s generation will be unfamiliar with, the band gives you a reason to care about them. Popular songs that are covered include, “[I Would Walk] 500 Miles,” and, “Should I Stay Or Should I Go.” Both of these are completely pop punkified and feel fresh and not overdone [though it seems they are staples in the cover world]. My favorite part of the whole record is the fact the band took plenty of time to rework every song to sound like an MxPx original. There isn’t one point when they’re stretching themselves to sound like someone else and that’s exactly where the magic of this album exists. Trust me, if we have anything to do with this, we will bring you as much on this album as possible in the near future. You’re going to want it if you don’t already. It’s that good.
