EDITORIAL: “The Last Song That Changed My Life”

Monday has proven to be slower than usual, so I thought we’d spice things up with a quick editorial.

When was the last time a song really knocked you on your ass? Keep in mind I am not referring to a song being catchy, or perhaps earning a few repeats in your system, I am talking about the kind of song that makes you stop in your tracks and think, “Whoa, where was my life before I heard this song?” I hear probably 25 new artists a week, each with 2-3 songs for us to preview, and that doesn’t even take into consideration the massive amount of new material being pushed by known artists, but I probably a song such as the one I’m describing once a Season (if that).

The most recent song to cause my life to come to a screeching halt comes from none other than Maine’s Pinsky. Signed to Sinking Ship Records, this small indie rock act has put out one full length and an EP, the latter of which provided the song that inspired this piece. I know them only through mutual friends, but having heard what I’m about to share with you, I think we probably have a lot more in common than I could possibly imagine.

Buried at the end of Pinsky’s incredible Weekends EP lies a little acoustic song entitled “Passed Youth.” The track is short, running just under three minutes, but it pretty much encompasses everything that has been going on in my head and life over the past few years. You see, there seems to come a point in the life of everyone chasing a dream where they realize the cost of devotion. Sometimes this means realizing your friends have moved on in life, sometimes it’s the weight of distance on relationships, and others it’s something equally emotional though completely different altogether. I don’t know where it stems from, but I’ve always thought it was your mind’s way of testing your dedication. Things get hard, sacrifices are made, and regardless of where you end up – what’s done is done. Some might say that’s depressing, but if you gave it your all and it’s what you always wanted – what is there to be sad about?

“Passed Youth” left an impression on me that served as a reminder that there are hundreds, perhaps thousands out there cutting their teeth on anything they can find in hopes of making a dream come true, and while it may seem lonely, you’re really part of one gigantic community that relies on each other to succeed. If you give it your all and support those who do the same, things may or may not work out, but at least you’ll have the time of your life.
