Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea Leads Sports Protest

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are famed sports fans, with drummer Chad Smith a fan of all teams Detroit, and the band themselves writing multiple songs that reference their love for the Los Angeles Lakers. Flea, a former USC music student, played the national anthem at a UCLA game recently, and was wearing a shirt that spearheaded some protesting.

UCLA had a recruit, Shabazz Muhammad, declared ineligible, and Flea was wearing a “Free Shabazz Muhammad” shirt. The crowd ate it up and chanted a “Free Shabazz” chant. Given that Flea went to USC, I really think he was just doing it for cheers (“Knibb High Football Rules!”). But either way, this is starting to make some waves in the sports world, and it’s good to see that although the Red Hot Chili Peppers are completely out of touch with music, they are still aware of mundane events in college basketball.
