UTG Has a Pop Music Crush On G.R.L.

Pop music has been dominated with boy bands in recent years, but we at UTG believe it’s past time for another girl group to dominate the charts. If you agree, read on and prepare to dance.

Allow us to introduce you to a new girl group known as G.R.L., which consists of 5 members; Lauren Bennett, Paula van Oppen, Natasha Slayton, Simone Battle and Emmalyn Estrada. They’re the product of Robin Antin (aka the woman who gave us The Pussycat Dolls and made us want to loosen up buttons), and they recently landed the dream deal of every aspiring pop star by joining Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records.

So, why care?

Radio has a long history of girl groups dominating the charts. From The Supremes to The Go Gos, Salt n Pepa, TLC, The Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child, and beyond – some of the biggest pop songs of all time have resulted from all-female groups. I’m not going to put G.R.L. on the same pedestal as these legendary performers just yet, but after hearing their new single “Vacation” it’s hard to imagine a future without them topping Billboard, iTunes, and everything in between. It’s the kind of high-gloss confectionery magic you would expect from someone signed by Dr. Luke, and it’s fittingly complete with a hook that is as catchy as it is almost annoyingly simplistic. The song has been floating around for awhile, but the official video debuted today and we figured there was no better time to bring them to you.

It’s hard to not feel sorry for anyone that has to live with a guy. I am one and though I do my best, most the time I am not the tidiest roommate to have. In the video for “Vacation” G.R.L. find their sorority house overrun with muscle-laden guys who have zero interest in picking up after themselves. Frustrated by this, the girls decide to head out for a night of fun (a vacation, if you will), and the video follows their journey. It’s fun, colorful, and does a fine job to identify the members of G.R.L. without objectifying them right out the gate. You can view the clip below.

When you hear a song that will soon dominate radio there is an energy in the air that has no comparison. You feel it in your bones and instantly begin committing the hook to memory so as to look ‘in the know’ when your friends bring the song up (likely after following a link you post). G.R.L. have already made waves overseas and I have no doubt the same success will soon follow here in the United States. The bandwagon is pulling out of the station any day now, so consider this your final boarding call.

“Vacation” made an appearance on the Smurfs 2 soundtrack, but will likely appear on G.R.L.’s upcoming debut as well. The single is currently available on iTunes, but no word yet on when that album will surface. Comment below and let us know your thoughts on G.R.L.
