UTG PHOTOS & REVIEW: ‘My Wife Hates Me’ Live Podcast Taping (3/11/14)

“What are you guys watching that sex looks like making sausages?”

On Tuesday, March 11, some of the greatest minds in comedy and radio joined forces at the Comedy Cellar’s Village Underground in New York City. Things got weird. The special event was a live podcast taping of Rich Vos and Bonnie McFarlane’s show My Wife Hates Me. The married couple also shared an occupation, stand-up comedy.

The live taping was produced by fellow comic Robert Kelly for the Riotcast Network. The show was a “live marriage counseling” session of sorts. The moderator (conceivably the couple’s therapist for the night) was none other than Ron Bennington of SiriusXM’s The Ron and Fez Show. Ronnie B is also notorious for his countless interviews with comedic and musical icons through a series entitled Unmasked.

On top of the aforementioned, the night also featured appearances by Gregg “Opie” Hughes of The Opie and Anthony Show, Fez Whatley and Shelby of The Ron and Fez Show and even a special guest stand-up opener, Dan Soder.

Check out below to see photos and hear the details of the nights spectacle.

For the fans in attendance, this evening was a blast. Myself, well, I’m a bit of a radio geek. The way I look at it, the more interviews I listen to, the better I’ll become at interviewing others. For that reason, I was excited to meet and see many of the personalities and comedians I listen to frequently.

Dan Soder

I have one serious complaint about Dan Soder; he wasn’t on long enough. What a funny, funny guy. Prior to the show, I was able to talk to Soder, Kelly, and Vos. All three of them were hilarious and friendly. You better be ready if you plan to joke around with these guys, I gave Soder a sarcastic “boo” and Vos quickly challenged my gender and sexuality. I had that coming.

After Dan Soder’s quick stand-up show, Rich Vos and Bonnie McFarlane each did a few minutes before sitting down to discuss the taping and introducing Ron Bennington. I wish the two could’ve done full sets. Vos was on fire and McFarlane quickly came out to neutralize him, putting her husband back in check.

As if the crowd wasn’t already in an uproar, when Bennington took stage the room became electric. There was something so special and unique about the taping that is hard to explain unless you’re there to experience it. Watching and interacting with a podcast/radio show is a very different experience and really makes you feel more connected to the show.

The topic of conversation ranged from Vos’ desire to engage his wife in three-way sex to his simple inability to go a few moments without getting irrationally angry.

“I think when most of us look at this relationship,” says Bennington with a smirk, “We blame you, Bonnie, for staying.”

The charisma on stage between the three was priceless. Whether it’s making a mockery of “live-read” commercials or debating the values of college vs. street knowledge, it was almost hard to keep up with because I was distracted from laughing so hard.

At the end of the podcast, the trio opened up the floor to a quick Q&A session. “Is there any chance that this is a sham marriage?” was one of the generously optimistic questions.

One fan, who came up with a lame question involving hockey and Canada being a “third world country,” was quickly asked to shut up. This isn’t the sort of environment where you want to be the guy who bombs with a joke.

Once the show was wrapped up, fans were able to get posters autographed and take photos with all of the celebrities in the building. It certainly was a great way to spend a Tuesday evening. If you’re on the hunt for a new podcast, be sure to check out Riotcast.
