There have been a surprisingly small number of quote/unquote ‘chick flicks’ in recent years. More and more filmmakers are trying to target multiple demographics with each release, and as such the age of cute-meets-cute has started to go the way of the floppy disc. Nowadays cute only meets cute if something completely surreal is happening, and that looks to be exactly what is going on at the center of the upcoming drama Winter’s Tale.
Starring Colin Farrell opposite Downton Abbey‘s Jessica Brown Findlay, Winter’s Tale is a time-hopping love story that hopes to find new ground in the world of ‘lost memory’ romance. The story follows a man named Peter (Farrell) as he falls for a dying girl (Findlay). Peter is plagued by a gangster (Russell Crowe), and eventually finds himself living in New York decades later, alone, without a single memory of his former life. He befriends a woman in the park, and soon the two of them begin to unravel the mystery of Peter’s continued existence. You can view the trailer below.
I would be lying if I said Winter’s Tale looked like a smash hit, but there is something about the plot that draws me in. It probably has to do with the relationship between Farrell and Crowe, which the trailer offers little explanation for, but either way I think I’ve found my date movie for Valentine’s Day 2014.
