Dammit: I Don’t Hate The New Justin Bieber Song And Neither Will You (I Think)

It has been too long since we used the ‘dammit’ heading. Feels good to be back.

You know how sometimes a song you never expected to enjoy grabs you by the collar, slaps you once or twice, and suddenly your eyes are open to the greatness being delivered through your ear canals? I just had that moment with a Justin Bieber song. Okay, not ‘just’ because in all honesty I needed a second cup of coffee and four repeats to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind, but here I am writing for one and all to see that the new single from Bieber is damn solid. Let’s discuss, shall we?

For the last month Justin Bieber has been transitioning from pop superstar to R&B crooner thanks to a series of new music releases known as #MusicMondays. Each week, shortly after midnight on Monday morning, Bieber has taken to the internet to unleash a new single with minimal instrumentation and heartfelt lyrics aplenty. The results up to this point have been pretty mixed, but today’s offering, a bass-and-acoustic heavy track known as “Recovery,” is another story altogether. This simplistic track finds Bieber playing the role of a guilty party who attempts to admit his faults while simultaneously attempting to win back the affections of his former lover. He’s acknowledges he’s made some mistakes, often in pursuit of his career, but has recently realized the girl he’s speaking to is all he ever really needed or wanted in life. Will she hear him out? You can stream the song and discover the answer for yourself, below.

If a slightly road worn DeLorean appeared outside UTG HQ right now I would expect a teenage version of myself to hop out and swiftly punch me in the throat for writing this, but I cannot deny the power of a great pop offering when I hear it and Justin Bieber’s “Recovery” is a damn good pop song. It’s catchy without being grating, and it offers a side to the vocalist that we have yet to see. Justin is trying to evolve beyond being a teen sensation, and while this is not exactly a great departure it does prove he has more to offer listeners than high-gloss radio singles built on repetition. There is little-to-no chance “Recovery” will find its way to radio, but at as far as I’m concerned it’s one of the absolute best songs Justin Bieber has ever delivered.
