Under The Gun’s photographer, Tori Thomas, attended the Twenty One Pilots show featuring Robert DeLong and Sirah at The Intersection in Grand Rapids, MI on October 24, 2013.
When I arrived to The Intersection, I could tell that this was going to be one of the best shows I’ve seen. I had the chance to interview Sirah (check back here tomorrow) before the show and got an idea where her music comes from; she’s down to earth and you could tell during her performance. During one song, she had a security guard support her on the barricade to be closer to the fans. Sirah gives her all on stage and gets the crowd involved. She just released an EP entitled Inhale; I recommend it for anyone who likes rap and pop, it’s a good mix of both.
Following Sirah’s set was Robert DeLong, a California native who puts a spin on game controllers. During DeLong’s set, he used Wii controllers, a joystick, and various game controllers, and he paired that with a looping machine and drums. I’ve seen one man bands with looping pedals, but no one like DeLong before. It was amazing to see what he could put together and the instruments he used to create it.
Then it came time for the headliners, Twenty One Pilots. I’ve seen TOP multiple times before, but they seem to get better with every show and always add something new to their live element. Throughout the evening, band members Tyler Joseph (singer) and Josh Dun (drummer) change masks and outfits to match the song they perform. I’ve seen wardrobe changes, but this was after almost every song; this gave a different feel for every song. I can honestly say, that Twenty One Pilots is one of the best bands I’ve seen live, they not only perform their asses off, but they make sure you leave the show happy and wanting more! If you ever have the chance to see them live, I highly suggest it.
