Celtic punk legends The Pogues revealed in a social network post early this morning that guitarist Phil Chevron has passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Writing to fans in an informal manner, members of The Pogues posted the following message online this morning accompanied by an image of Phil Chevron:
“After a long illness we are sorry to inform you that Philip passed away peacefully this morning and we all send our sincere condolences to his family.”
Chevron (56), whose real name is Philip Ryan, suffered from a recurrence of head and neck cancer. He was first diagnosed in the summer of 2007 and had been undergoing treatment ever since. He was last seen in public in August at a fundraiser held in his honor.
Plans are being put in place for a memorial service, but no date has been set at this time.
Chevron had a life in music long before The Pogues, but it’s his effort with the seminal Irish punk outfit that made him a legend in the industry. Join us in paying our respects to Phil by enjoying one of our favorite tracks from The Pogues at the end of this post.
Rest in peace, Phil. You will be missed.
