Christmas is in a week, and Stephen Colbert is more than ready to get the countdown ticking. Yep, it’s Colbert’s Christmas Carols Week, and he night number one of cheery musical guests happened last night as he invited The National to the stage for the second time this year. As a treat from Santa, special guest (and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer) Gregg Allman showed up as well to help perform a bluesy rendition of “Silver Bells.”

Hearing Matt Berninger singer “ring-a-ling” in his ridiculously deep voice makes you wonder why he never took the country route. Then again, one look at him in his glasses onstage and you remember he’s just a regular guy sharing his melancholy with the rest of us because he knows how it should be phrased.
