Aaron Paul Wages Vehicular War In First ‘Need For Speed’ Trailer

Move over, Dominic Toretto. There’s a new character headed to the silver screen in 2014 with hopes of launching a franchise, and this afternoon we get our first look at the trailer.

The world has been curious about the forthcoming adaptation of the best-selling video game series Need For Speed since Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul was announced as its star in late 2012. Details on the supporting cast, plot, and the like have been kept tightly under wraps throughout production, but today that all changed when Apple debuted the first official trailer. In the footage, Paul is seen driving a variety of stylish vehicles in beautiful settings between cuts from a sizzle reel of crashes and other driving-related carnage. You can view the clip below.

A press release announcing the trailer’s debut and outlining the official synopsis reads:

Need for Speed captures the thrills of the video game franchise in a real-world setting. The story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country race against time—one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. In a last attempt to save his struggling garage, blue-collar mechanic Tobey Marshall (Paul)—who with his team skillfully builds and races muscle cars on the side—reluctantly partners with wealthy, arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Cooper). Just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Poots) looks like it will save the business, a disastrous, unsanctioned race results in Dino framing Tobey for manslaughter.

Two years later and fresh out of prison, Tobey is set on revenge with plans to take down Dino in the high-stakes De Leon race—the Super Bowl of underground racing. To get there in time, Tobey must run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet, dodging cops coast-to-coast and dealing with fallout from a dangerous bounty Dino put on his car. With his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia as allies, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

It has been far too long since someone gave Fast & Furious a run for their money, and I dare say Need For Spped may do just that. Aside from the absolutely atrocious hairstyles Paul has in certain clips, everything about this trailer hints at the full feature being a lot of over-the-top fun.

Need For Speed opens nationwide March 14, 2014. Comment below and let us know your thoughts on the trailer.
